What are your goals for 2014?

So many people I talk to enjoy reading personal development books, but have you everconsidered your favourite children’s classics? Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland has so many metaphors it could actually be a personal development book! The best one of all is when Alice meets the Cheshire Cat:

“Would you tell me please,” says Alice “which way I ought to go from here?”

“Well that depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the cat.

“Oh I don’t much care where,” said Alice.

“Then is doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the cat

What a brilliant message – like Alice, if we don’t know where we are going, we can’t possibly know how to get there. We can all fall into the trap of working like this, but if we don’t know where we want to go or why, we’re just travelling without any purpose or direction.

Defining our aims is a vital part of the journey. How can you expect to reach your destination if you don’t know where that is? How can you achieve something if you don’t know what that something is that you want to achieve? How can you work out when you have got to where you need to be if you never know where you are going?

Make yourself a list of goals for 2014!

We need goals to give us momentum. They help us to focus on growth and encourage us to change, learn and develop as we grow. Only when we accept that we need to go on a journey can we understand that we have to work out where we want to be and how we can get there
