Management Monday: Goals

Alice in Wonderland has to be my favourite children’s classic to read as an adult.  It’s full of fantastic metaphors.

“Would you tell me please,” says Alice, “which way I ought to go from here?’

“Well that depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the cat.

“Oh I don’t much care where,” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the cat.

So many of us are just like Alice, not knowing where we are going, or why we are going there… Just travelling somewhere with no map, no goals.

The question you must ask yourselves is, “How do you expect to get there if you don’t know where ‘there’ is?” How will you motivate yourself to achieve something if you don’t know what that something is? How can you work out what you have to do to get there – if you don’t know where you are going?ST_HORTONCONSULTING_149 1

The fear of failure in life scares most to the point that many of us would rather not do something, than try it and fail.  What you need to realise, though, is that the more you fear failure, the more likely you are to get it – because that fear will prevent you from doing amazing things that you need to do in order to be successful.

Goals are about momentum – they give you the focus you need to grow, to change, to learn new things.  Every business is on its own personal journey and sometimes your journey has to take a different route than originally planned. We all know life can throw a spanner in the works, but the fact remains that you will still have been moving your business forward, making the effort to learn new things, meet new people, be vigilant, be inspired.  Refuse to allow yourself to become stagnant.

I am sure we can all reflect back on our ‘failures’ – but they have all been lessons too and many of us wouldn’t be where we are today if that so-called failure hadn’t happened.

So set yourself goals this week – it doesn’t matter if you don’t achieve them all. What matters is that you lift the fear away from making goals and keep the momentum.  You’ve all heard the saying, ”Better to have tried and failed, than never to have tried at all”.

Where you put your focus is where you will get your results.

Have a great week!
