Dental Reception Is a Profession. It’s Time We Treated It Like One.

Award in Professional Dental Reception – EduQual-endorsed Level 3 award from Horton Consulting, offering 12 months of professional development for dental reception teams.

I’ve worked in dentistry for nearly 30 years.

And throughout that time, there is one part of the dental team that I believe has been consistently undervalued when it comes to structured professional development:

Reception.

We expect our front-of-house teams to be brilliant communicators.

We expect them to handle new patient enquiries.

We expect them to manage busy diaries, support clinicians, understand practice systems, handle difficult conversations, respond appropriately to complaints, and create an exceptional patient experience.

They are often the first person a prospective patient speaks to and the last person they see before leaving the practice.

They can influence whether somebody books.

Whether they return.

How they feel about their experience.

And, ultimately, how smoothly the dental business operates.

Yet how are many reception team members trained for all of that?

A few days of shadowing.
A handover from somebody else.
Perhaps an occasional training day.

And then we expect them to get on with it.

I don’t think that’s good enough.

That’s why I created the Award in Professional Dental Reception.

The Award in Professional Dental Reception is an EduQual Level 3, EduQual-endorsed customised award, delivered through The Horton Academy. Horton Consulting is an approved EduQual Centre

It carries 8 EduQual credits and, importantly for me, it isn’t a one-day course.

It is 12 months of structured professional development designed specifically for people working in dental reception and front of house.

Because reception isn’t simply somewhere you start before moving on to something else.

Reception is a profession.

And it should be developed like one.

Who have I created it for?

I’ve created it for the receptionist who wants to be brilliant at what they do.

For the person who wants to understand why systems work, rather than simply being told which buttons to press.

For the front-of-house team member who wants more confidence when speaking to patients.

For the experienced receptionist who has developed enormous skill over the years but has never had that expertise formally acknowledged through structured development.

And I’ve created it for practice owners and managers who know that developing the people they already have can have an enormous impact on their business.

Because this isn’t only an investment in an individual.

It’s an investment in your patient experience, enquiry conversion, communication, systems, consistency and team capability.

Learning that actually shows up in the practice

One of the most important things to me when designing this programme was that it couldn’t become another course where somebody attends training, takes lots of notes, returns to work enthusiastic…

…and six weeks later nothing has changed.

Throughout the programme, every learner develops their own Front of House Excellence Portfolio.

It isn’t a folder full of course notes.

It becomes evidence of what they are developing and implementing in practice: their communication, enquiry processes, front-of-house systems, patient experience improvements, and approach to challenging situations and complaints.

So while the individual develops professionally, the practice should be developing too.

That matters enormously to me.

Training is only valuable when it translates into better capability and better performance.

Four areas of professional development

Across the 12 months, learners work through four units:

Professional Front of House Practice
Developing the standards, behaviours and communication expected from a professional front-of-house team member.

New Patient Enquiries
Understanding how to manage that crucial first contact professionally and confidently.

Reception as an Operating System
Looking beyond the front desk to understand the role reception plays in the dental business’s systems and day-to-day operations.

Challenging Situations and Complaints Handling
Building the confidence and capability to manage difficult conversations professionally, calmly and constructively.

This is what modern dental reception requires.

And now I’m looking for the first 20.

The Founding Cohort begins in November 2026 and will be limited to just 20 learners.

There will only ever be one founding cohort.

For me, these aren’t simply the first 20 people to take a programme.

They are the first group to be part of something I have wanted to see in dentistry for a very long time:

Reception professionals being given structured development that reflects the importance of the role they perform.

The founding cohort investment is £1,645 inclusive for the full 12-month programme.

The learner and their Practice Owner, Practice Manager, or senior leader apply jointly because I want both sides committed to the development.

This isn’t an instant-purchase training course.

It is an investment in someone’s professional growth.

And at the end of those 12 months, completion won’t disappear into an email inbox either.

Learners who successfully complete the programme will be invited to The Horton Honours Day in December 2027 — an in-person masterclass and ceremony to recognise what they have achieved.

If someone commits a year to developing themselves professionally, I think that deserves to be celebrated properly.

This is bigger than reception training.

I want us to change the way we think about reception in dentistry.

Not as “the person on the desk.”

Not as an entry-level role.

Not as the department that gets training when everybody else has been dealt with.

But as skilled professionals who directly influence the patient experience and the dental business’s performance.

If you’re a practice owner or manager with someone on your team who deserves that investment, or you’re in dental reception and ready to develop your career—applications for the Founding Cohort of the Award in Professional Dental Reception are now open.

Twenty places.
Twelve months.
One founding cohort.

I cannot wait to see who the first 20 will be.
