Horton Consulting is now an approved education centre, launching a formal Level 3 Treatment Coordinator qualification worth eight credits.

Today, I can finally share some news that I am incredibly proud of.

Horton Consulting is now an approved education centre, delivering formal, credit-bearing qualifications for the UK dental profession.

We’re starting with treatment coordination, but this is just the beginning.

The TCO Accreditation within my 12-month TCO Business Growth Program now gives participants the opportunity to work towards the Award in Treatment Coordination – EduQual Level 3, which is worth eight credits.

For me, this feels like a really significant next chapter.

I have spent years training, coaching, and mentoring people within dentistry. I have trained thousands of dental professionals across the UK and Europe, but I have always wanted to formalise that experience.

Something that does not simply say:

“I have been on a course.”

I wanted dental professionals to be able to work towards a formal qualification, demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and gain credits for their professional development.

That ambition has now become a reality.

I have delivered structured TCO development and accreditation for many years. In the past, I sometimes described the completed program as a qualification or diploma because it represented a substantial standard of learning and professional development. However, it was not previously a formally awarded qualification.

That is what has now changed.

This is no longer simply my own accreditation or diploma. Participants who successfully complete the formal pathway can achieve a recognised Level 3 Award with an eight-credit value.

For me, this is far more than the launch of a qualification.

It is the formal recognition of a role that has shaped my entire professional career—and of the standards, skills, and leadership potential I have always believed Treatment Coordinators should represent.

Twenty-two years of treatment coordination

I stepped into my first role as Treatment Coordinator on 4 November 2004.

Treatment coordination was not widely understood at the time. There was no established blueprint to follow and very little recognition of the influence a skilled TCO could have on the patient journey, the clinical team and the performance of a dental practice.

Over the years, I have worked as a Treatment Coordinator, practice manager, dental practice owner, consultant, trainer, coach and mentor. I have trained thousands of Treatment Coordinators and dental teams across the UK and Europe, and I have seen the role evolve considerably.

But I have also seen the title “Treatment Coordinator” applied to very different roles.

A truly effective TCO is not simply someone who follows up on treatment plans, sends financial information, or makes telephone calls. Nor should the role be reduced to selling dentistry.

A professional Treatment Coordinator creates the time and space for patients to talk. They help patients understand their options, navigate their treatment journey, and make informed decisions. They work closely with clinicians, communicate confidently with the wider team, and contribute meaningfully to the practice’s growth and development.

At the highest level, a TCO becomes a leader within the business.

That is the standard this program has been built to develop.

More than a qualification

The Award in Treatment Coordination – EduQual Level 3 is the formal qualification achieved through the TCO Accreditation within my established TCO Business Growth Program.

That word—formal—matters.

Dental professionals are often offered courses described as qualifications, diplomas, or accreditations, when, in reality, they may only result in a provider-issued certificate. While high-quality non-regulated professional development can still be extremely valuable, it is important to be clear about the distinction.

My TCO Accreditation now leads to a formal Level 3 Award carrying eight credits. It gives successful participants more than a certificate confirming their attendance at a course; it formally recognises the learning and assessment they have completed.

It is not a new one-day course or a standalone introduction to treatment coordination.

The TCO Business Growth Program is a 12-month development journey that combines specialist training, coaching, and mentoring. Participants apply what they learn within their own practices, strengthen their consultation and communication skills, develop their commercial understanding and grow into more influential members of the leadership team.

Most importantly, I deliver every element.

Participants are not passed between a rotating group of tutors, trainers or mentors. They learn directly from my 22 years of experience in treatment coordination and from the practical knowledge I have gained through managing, owning and consulting within dental practices.

I train them. I coach them. I mentor them. I challenge them. And I support them as they put the learning into practice.

Alongside that training, coaching and mentoring, participants work towards the formal Award in Treatment Coordination – EduQual Level 3, worth eight credits.

The qualification gives formal recognition to their learning. The wider program develops their ability to make a measurable difference to their patients, their team, and their practice.

Who is the program for?

This pathway is designed for established, patient-facing Treatment Coordinators who want to develop beyond the basics of the role.

To join the TCO Business Growth Program, a participant must:

  • Work face-to-face as a Treatment Coordinator for a minimum of two days each week.

  • Have access to a dedicated consultation room.

  • Be motivated to develop their professional, consultation and commercial skills.

  • Want to become a leader within the practice.

  • Be ready to work alongside the management team and contribute to the wider business.

  • Have the support of the practice owner or principal to implement what they learn.

These requirements matter because treatment coordination cannot be developed through theory alone.

Participants need the opportunity to meet patients, hold meaningful consultations, apply new systems, reflect on their performance and contribute to genuine business improvement. The qualification sits within a programme built around implementation—not simply attendance or the completion of written tasks.

The beginning of the Horton Consulting Education Centre

The Award in Treatment Coordination is the first formal qualification to be delivered through the Horton Consulting Education Centre, but it will not be the last.

In September 2026, I will launch the Award in Professional Dental Reception – Level 3, a year-long qualification designed to recognise and develop the professional knowledge, skills, and contributions of the dental reception team.

Following soon afterwards will be the Understanding of Treatment Coordination qualification. This will provide a more accessible introduction to treatment coordination for those who need a strong foundation in the role, but who are not yet eligible for—or do not currently require—the advanced 12-month TCO Business Growth Program.

Both qualifications are being developed specifically to address the realities of working in a dental practice. My intention is to build meaningful, credit-bearing professional-development pathways that allow dental team members to demonstrate what they know, apply that learning in practice and receive formal recognition for their development.

I have always believed passionately in developing people. Through the Horton Consulting Education Centre, I can now take that development one step further:

From training and development to formal, credit-bearing qualifications.

A very proud moment

I have spent more than two decades advocating for professional treatment coordination and demonstrating the difference it can make when implemented properly.

To now be able to offer a formal Level 3 Award through the program I have developed and personally deliver is an incredibly proud moment.

I also already have Treatment Coordinators ready to begin this next stage of their development, which makes today’s announcement even more exciting.

Twenty-two years after I first became a Treatment Coordinator, this feels like both a culmination and a new beginning—for the TCO Business Growth Program and for Horton Consulting.

And I genuinely could not be prouder.
