Award in Professional Dental Reception

  • EduQual Level 3
  • 8 EduQual credits
  • 12 months
  • Starts November 2026

Reception is where the patient relationship begins. This programme recognises it as a skilled professional role, and gives the people in it the structured development they have rarely been offered.

Every member of a dental team matters. Reception is too often the one left out of structured development.

Why this programme exists

Reception is a profession.
It should be developed like one.

Clinicians have clear routes for learning and progression. Reception teams are usually given a diary, a phone and a few days of shadowing, then expected to manage first impressions, new patient enquiries, complaints and the flow of an entire practice.

Dental reception is not simply an administrative position. It deserves the same structured, professional development as any other role in the team.

“I designed this programme because I have seen what a skilled, confident reception team does for a practice, and how rarely that skill is recognised or invested in.”

The role

More than the front desk

In most practices, reception and front-of-house team members are responsible for:

The first impression of the dental business
Patient communication, in person and on the phone
New patient enquiries
Managing and supporting diary systems
The overall patient experience
Difficult conversations
Handling complaints
Supporting practice systems and processes
Communication between patients, clinicians and the wider team

That is not an entry-level job description. It is a skilled role that affects how every part of the practice runs.

02

New Patient Enquiries

How to handle new patient enquiries professionally and confidently, from the first moment of contact.

03

How reception supports the systems and processes of the practice, and why it sits at the centre of how a dental business operates day to day.

04

Challenging Situations and Complaints Handling

How to manage difficult conversations and complaints with professionalism, composure and accountability.

Front of House Excellence Portfolio

Learning that shows up in the practice

Throughout the 12-month programme, learners build their own Front of House Excellence Portfolio: a practical collection of evidence, systems, reflections and examples that show how they have developed their capability in the reception role.

This is not a folder of course notes. The portfolio captures how learning is being applied in the practice, helping the learner show their development while creating useful resources for the wider business.

The Front of House Excellence Portfolio will evidence the learner’s development across:

Patient communication
New patient enquiry handling
Front-of-house systems and processes
Patient experience improvement
Difficult situations and complaints handling

By the end of the programme, the learner has a structured record of their progress and contribution. The practice has clearer evidence of the systems, behaviours and standards being developed at front of house.

The portfolio gives the learner evidence of their professional development, and gives the practice evidence that development is being translated into action.

For Practice Owners and Practice Managers

Investing in the team you already have

Your reception team shapes how patients feel about your practice before they ever meet a clinician. Yet front-of-house development is often limited to a one-off training day, or left to learning on the job.

Supporting a team member through a recognised professional award demonstrates real investment in them. It supports their progression, and can help create a stronger sense of value and professional identity in a role too often treated as administrative.

Because the portfolio is built in the practice, training does not happen away from the business and get forgotten. It becomes a visible record of what is being introduced, improved and embedded.

The portfolio can help you to

See how the learner is applying their development day to day
Identify improvements to front-of-house systems and patient communication
Create greater consistency in how enquiries, patient interactions and challenging situations are handled
Support coaching, one-to-one meetings and performance conversations
Build practical resources the wider reception team can keep using
Recognise the learner’s growing capability, confidence and contribution
Create a stronger framework for future progression and responsibility

The aim is not just to complete an award. It is to leave the practice with a more capable front-of-house professional and stronger systems than it started with.

FAQs

Questions answered

Is this a dental reception qualification?

If you are looking for a dental reception qualification, it is important to know exactly what this programme is. The Award in Professional Dental Reception (EduQual Level 3) is an EduQual-endorsed customised award carrying 8 EduQual credits. It is not a regulated qualification and is not SCQF credit-rated. What it offers is 12 months of structured professional development, an award endorsed by EduQual and delivered by an approved EduQual Centre, and a Front of House Excellence Portfolio evidencing the learner’s development.

How is this different from a one-day dental reception course?

It runs over 12 months rather than a single day. Learners work through four units and build a Front of House Excellence Portfolio showing how their learning is being applied in the practice.

Are there exams?

No. Each unit is assessed through a practical assignment, completed in the practice and submitted by the learner. Before the final deadline, learners can submit one draft for feedback and review, so they know they are on track before their final submission.

Who is the programme for?

Dental reception and front-of-house team members. Applications are completed jointly by the prospective learner and their Practice Owner, Practice Manager or senior leader.

When does it start and how long does it last?

The founding cohort starts in November 2026. The programme lasts 12 months.

What is the investment?

The founding cohort investment is £1,645 inclusive. The founding cohort is limited to 20 learners, and this rate applies only to the inaugural cohort.

If a team member leaves, can their place be transferred?

Places are not transferable. Every place is offered following a joint application, and each learner is individually reviewed and approved before enrolment, so a place cannot pass to another team member. Places are non-refundable, with the exception of a 14-day cooling-off period, which begins once the learner has started the programme and completed initial onboarding.

What happens at the end of the programme?

Completion is marked at The Horton Honours Day on Wednesday 8 December 2027 in Solihull, Birmingham: a morning masterclass with Laura Horton followed by the ceremony. It is invitation only.
